Stoph Scheer
I may not be the first person in my family to make a living in show business, but I am the first to claim I’m huge in Vermont.
I was nearly born in a theater (my mom stopped by a dress rehearsal while she was in labor with me) - and I've nearly lived in theaters ever since.
I earned my BA in Theatre at Muhlenberg College. My favorite project there was Lebensraum, a quick-change tragicomedy by Israel Horowitz.
After graduating in 2007, I cut my teeth as an acting intern at the Peterborough Players, where I had the honor of acting with the late James Whitmore. After that I was an apprentice at Actors Theatre of Louisville.
I play a wide range of characters, and many genders. My performances in drag comedies helped me discover that I am trans and non-binary. I'm well known for my comic roles, but I'm critically acclaimed for some of my tragic characters, and I occasionally step into the hero role.
I love Shakespeare. I've recently played Touchstone, both Antipholus twins, Laertes, and Oberon. And I studied Shakespeare with Fiasco Theater here in NYC.
I love appearing in new work. At Actors Theatre of Louisville I originated roles in Extremely, by Rolin Jones, and In Paris You Will Find Many Baguettes but Only One True Love, by Mike Lew - both of which premiered in the Humana Festival of New American Plays. In New York City I collaborated with New York Circus Arts, creating new characters in both Takura and Frost. Also in New York, I originated the role of Jules in the premiere of Chana Porter’s Bird on a Wire at Dixon Place.
I love creating my own work. Back at Actors Theatre I developed Ur-boy, a physical one-person show and my first solo. After moving to NYC I performed many new pieces at tinyDANGEROUSfun, a monthly Brooklyn cabaret, and reprised several of those at The People's Circus, a show I hosted at the Stonewall Inn.
I have my own theatre company! Doppelskope's shows for adults and children have been performed in New York, New Orleans, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. Gruff!, our post-apocalyptic climate change musical for families, was written up in The New York Times during its Off-Broadway run. We explore life's darkest problems through comedy, using our unique hybrid of clown, puppetry, magic and improvisation.
I love circus arts. One of my favorite projects was Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice, produced at Lost Nation Theater and directed by Eric Love. I played Orpheus, opposite Kate Kenney as Eurydice. Kate and I are both aerialists, and this production was a fusion of theatre and aerial dance. I've also worked with Atlas Circus Company.
I specialize in quick-change comedies. I played every character in The Mystery of Irma Vep over the course of two productions. I was nine characters in The Hound of the Baskervilles. And I performed in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [abridged] as well as The Complete History of America [abridged]
My other NYC credits include New York Theatre Workshop, Cell Theatre, People's Improv Theatre, The Tank, and Extant Arts Company.
Regional credits include Theater of the American South, the International Mystery Writers Festival, Lost Nation Theater, the Philadelphia Fringe, the New Orleans Fringe, The Cell, Penasco Theatre, Hampton Theatre Company, Centenary Stage Company, Cortland Repertory Theatre, Millbrook Playhouse, and Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre, The Highland Center for the Arts, and The Neo-Political Cowgirls.
