I'm going to be offering puppet making workshops on two different Saturdays this this summer: July 25 and August 29th. Both workshops will be 10-4pm at Grace United Methodist Church in Plainfield, VT.
By the way, I'm Stoph, I'm a puppet master, which is a real thing I get to say because I have a master's degree in Puppet Arts from the University of Connecticut. I do a lot of work in LA and NY with the Jim Henson Company and with the Muppets. These workshops are the first time I'm offering any of my puppet-building techniques to the public.

This style of sock puppet is completely customizable: depending on the kind of sock you choose and your design choices, it can be any type of character or species (real or imagined.) I learned to make them from Marty Robinson (famous within puppetry as the performer for Snuffy and Telly on Sesame Street, and for developing the first Audrey II puppet for Little Shop of Horrors.) Marty developed this style himself, and these puppets are so lovely and effective to perform with. They also make great sidekicks and alter-egos. Behold, a demo:
The process of making these puppets is easy and accessible. There's no sewing or patterning, and we'll be practicing what I call "intuitive design," playfully discovering the character of your puppet AS you're making it rather than planning it all out ahead of time. I'll ask you to bring some very simple supplies (a pair of socks, a metal coat hanger, a bit of cardboard) and I'll provide the rest. Many of the techniques and aesthetics that go into this process are applicable to making other types and styles of puppets as well, so this workshop also serves as a foundation to the beginning of an entire puppet-making journey, if you're ambitious to become a puppet-maker.
The workshop is 6 hours, giving us more than enough time to build our puppets and have a little lunch break, with time left over at the end to play with our new sidekicks and explore their characters together.
